Mission Statement: (See Web Site For Updated Information)
Now in its 10th year, Camp Kids Haven has already served more than 275 children either infected or affected by HIV and AIDS. This August, Lutheran Social Services of the National Capital Area will once again offer a week of recreational summer camp to children ages 7 to 13 from the metropolitan Washington, D.C. area.
Located at Mar-Lu Ridge facility in Jefferson, Md., Camp Kids Haven strives to create a warm, loving environment where all children are welcome regardless of their HIV status. Many children infected or affected by HIV and AIDS have little social support to help them come to terms with the disease. At camp, these children are part of an open, supportive community of peers and adults who help them to renew their appreciation of life and the importance of making healthy choices.
Round-the-clock nursing care must be provided for both camps. We are looking for volunteer certified LPN or RNs to help fill the schedules for both camps, ideally full-time but also whatever you can offer. On-site training will be arranged as the camp nears, and will be mandatory for all nursing volunteers. We also have openings for a nursing coordinator to lead the volunteer nurse staff, as well as camp counselor positions for uncertified applicants who may be interested in hands-on experience with the HIV/AIDS community.

Nurse Requirements and responsibilities include:

•obtaining appropriate state licensure
•reviewing health records before camp to assess situation
•Ensuring that all health needs of campers and staff are met at all times
•Providing direct medical care to approximately 40-60 campers and staff
•Willingness to Work closely with children ages 7-18 and the HIV/AIDS community
•Flexibility of schedule depending on camp activities and trips
•Working and providing health daily needs in an outdoor environment
•following procedures consistent with camp and legal protocol
•assistance in monitoring, maintaining and meeting the needs of medical documents and paperwork for campers and staff during camp
•ensuring the medical needs of campers are met at all times, including dispensing medication several times each day
•assistance in working with staff to coordinate all camper medical needs on a daily basis
•respect and agreement to confidentiality of campers and staff health
